The summer season is approaching, and many homeowners are already thinking about how to furnish B&Bs in Sardinia. If you don't know where to start and are looking for inspiration to make your B&B more appealing, you've come to the right place! With this article, we are launching the "Home Staging in Sardinia" column, created with the practical advice of property manager and home stager Raffaela Bellu.

What does a home staging expert do?

Home staging is a term related to the theatrical world (from the combination of home = house + stage = stage) and refers to the “staging” of a house to make it more attractive, and therefore—whether for sale or rental—to ensure a final product that is more welcoming and has strong appeal.

In the case of a B&B, the tourist is our target customer, so we need to understand their needs and preferences so they can find what they expect from their vacation within our space.

The homeowner must always consider that the first evaluation by a tourist takes place online, as they often do not live in the same area as the B&B they are renting. Therefore, their choice is made based on one or more photos that should represent both the property and the associated experience. The job of the home stager is to effectively communicate what we offer with the B&B: for example, the space represents not only the property itself but also the surrounding area. That is why it is strongly recommended to use furnishings and artisanal accessories that can evoke the local culture where our guest chooses to spend their vacation.

How does your collaboration with the B&B owner take place?

Managing a hospitality establishment—such as a B&B—presents certain complexities. Twenty years ago, when the B&B phenomenon was just starting in Italy, it was a simple solution for families who decided to offer a room or part of their home to accommodate travelers, allowing them to enjoy an immersive vacation experience closely connected with the local population and its customs. Today, tourists are increasingly demanding, and while they still appreciate the "homey" environment (favoring a residence with a few rooms and people), they also seek privacy.

The compromise has been achieved where the homeowner has chosen to manage these establishments in a more managerial manner. Thus, the establishment has shifted from a private hospitality offering to a managerial hospitality operation, with a distinctly different quality. This quality can be reflected in the services provided by specialized external suppliers (outsourcing): for example, cleaning, provision of clean linens, breakfast, customer reception, local promotion, and so on. Therefore, the homeowner relies on these aids to enhance the quality of the service offered to tourists, thanks to the organizational mediation of the property manager, who helps them stand out among local offerings.

Decorating a B&B?

For this first article, here are seven ideas for decorating a B&B in Sardinia: let’s see how to furnish a double bedroom.

The first tip is to create a setup by choosing a reference color palette. For instance, if the B&B is located in a seaside area, select various shades of blue and add a neutral base—such as ecru, sand, or white—to repaint the walls of the room.

On this neutral base, add the furniture, opting for a simple and neutral style.

At this point, playing with shades of blue, find the right placement for decorative elements—such as cushions, curtains, runners, and small ceramic sculptures—to balance within the room and create a harmonious color rhythm.

For the details, let us draw inspiration from the room's intended use: being a master bedroom, it will likely host couples. We could therefore select items decorated with the Sardinian peacock motif, a traditional wedding symbol—often carved into the bride’s chest—to evoke the Sardinian agro-pastoral culture. The meaning of these details should be highlighted in the room's presentation, both online and during the initial welcome, so that our guests can appreciate the story embedded in their designated space.

For bedside tables, dressers, and sideboards, we choose white or neutral-toned table lamps with decorative details—such as the peacock—in shades of blue and light blue, maintaining consistency with the initial color palette.

If we want to visually "warm up" the environment, we can add a detail in raw wood. For example, a small table with two comfortable wooden chairs with cushions featuring typical Sardinian craftsmanship patterns. This wooden detail—warm and dark-toned—helps to break the neutral-blue combination.

In the attached bathroom, the style of the furnishings should maintain continuity with the previous space: a bathroom set—cup holder, soap dispenser, towels—in a neutral color, with blue and light blue details.

Attention: We should not give in to the temptation of choosing a different style for each room in the property. We can certainly personalize the rooms with a unique print or decorative detail, but we should maintain a cohesive style and color scheme throughout the different spaces. This consistency within the entire accommodation – between rooms and common areas – thus transforms the stay at the B&B into a genuine journey, connecting the interior with the exterior and the B&B with the surrounding area.
